Trend for this Fall: Shearling Part 2 + Outlander Episode 107

Two days ago I wrote about shearling jackets and coats. This fall shearling is also present in accessories. My favourite items are the meli melo pink bag, the Diane von Furstenberg bag and the Elizabeth and James bag.

Concerning the last episode of Outlander, The Wedding, there were several changes from the book. However, I enjoyed watching this episode and loved the end product. Here are the highlights:

  1. Civil Ceremony Vs. Religious Ceremony: In the books, Claire basically married her two husbands in the same church (at different periods of time of course). Since the reader is only experiencing Claire’s point of view and a linear plot line, Claire is very surprised to get married again in the same place she got married in the 20th century. In the TV show, Claire and Frank got married in a civil ceremony. However, Jamie and Claire get married in a church ceremony. I love this change because it adds more to their relationship. The viewer sees that Jamie wants to do things properly; he is a very honourable character. In a pre-industrial period in which few scientific advancements are in place, belief systems are important, especially religion. Jamie is a Roman Catholic, and he uses what he knows of the bible to make certain decisions (especially pertaining to Jack Black’s proposals). He is educated too so he is not a zealot. If we put ourselves in God’s perspective, Claire’s first marriage means nothing to Him; their union is not blessed. Could this be a reason why their marriage is childless? Of course, there is no much difference in modern times between a civil and a religious ceremony but this difference was very significant in the past. I think this deviation will play a significant role later on, especially if Claire meets a particular monk, Francois Anselm Mericoeur d’Armagnac. Claire is a non-practicing Roman Catholic and she will feel less guilty about loving Jamie if the explanations detailed above are given to her. However, I think that might put a lot of strain in her relationship with Frank when she gets back to the 20th Century (sorry for the little spoiler).
  2. Frank is always in Claire’s mind in the TV show: The TV show has put more emphasis about Claire missing her husband from the 20th century (at least that is how I perceive it). The actress portraying her really does a great job especially when she moves away from Jamie’s touch. The scene at the end in which she sees her hands with both wedding rings is compelling. Concerning Frank, we will see much more about him in the next episode, the mid-season finale. We will see scenes from another perspective which is not Claire’s. Book readers are not aware of what Frank has been experiencing when Claire was gone. The TV show also started with Claire’s voiceover. I believe this voiceover will be less prominent as the plot lines move forward.
  3. The wedding ring:  In the TV show, the middle part of a long key is used to make the ring. I am not sure about the significance of this, but I think the producers and writers will do a great job with this deviation.
  4. Coupling scenes: The first coupling was nicely done, especially since it involved an arranged marriage and a virgin husband. Perfect! I really loved this scene – there was a lot of respect and the bride was not ravished. The second coupling was lust / desire and the last one was love.
