Current Trends and Game of Thrones S04E05 (First of His Name)

Two weeks ago I mentioned that overalls are something to consider for this spring. The trend is popular among celebrities still. In fact, I am planning to wear overalls with a striped tee underneath this weekend.

I also found recently a very nice first knuckle ring by ManiaMania.

Here are my comments for the last episode of Game of Thrones, “First of His Name.”

  • Tywin – Cersei: The Lannisters are broke. Basically their mines are not producing gold anymore. This is a major spoiler because nothing in the books has been mentioned about this. However, this foreshadows the conflict between Cersei and the Iron Bank of Braavos (a financial institution presumed by readers to be associated with the Faceless Men).
  • Cersei: Her interactions with Oberyn, Marg and her father are puzzling. She is very nice out of a sudden especially to Oberyn and Marg, people that she really dislikes. Basically, she is playing the game of thrones. Tywin, Oberyn and Marg are the assigned judges for Tyrion’s trial, and she is doing everything at her reach to get Tyrion convicted and killed.
  • Oberyn Martell: He mentioned that he has 8 bastard daughters, known as the Sand Snakes (Sand is the bastard last name in Dorne). This is great news. For a while, it was speculated by readers that it was likely for the show to have some of the Sand Snakes merged to minimize the number of castings. However, it looks like all of them will be casted. He mentioned the name of one of them: Elia Sand, named after his sister. Elia Sand is Arya-like in nature and it is a strong reference to Lyanna Stark. Of course, this is speculation based on a released but unpublished chapter from The Winds of Winter, and the Knight of the Laughing Tree tale from A Storm of Swords.  When Oberyn tells Cersei, “we don’t hurt little girls in Dorne,” I could not stop laughing. I will not give details why now. Basically, that is a lie.
  • Jojen’s hand on fire: I did not get the meaning of this. I had to investigate this a little bit more. Basically Jojen foresaw the death of Karl Tanner. After all the mutineers were killed, their bodies were burned in conjunction with Craster’s Keep. I think this is the most likely reason. Here is what Jojen said to Tanner: “I saw you die tonight, I saw your body burn …….I saw the snow fall and bury your bones.” However, there are also other explanations, and they are discussed in the following thread: Jojen’s burning hand.
  • Sansa: She is posing as Littlefinger’s niece, Alayne. this is a slight deviation from the books in which she takes the role of Littlefinger’s bastard daughter. What I cannot tell from TV Alayne is whether she is trueborn or a bastard. I really pity Sansa – she immediately realizes that her aunt, Lysa, is crazy and jealous of her. That is due to the fact that Littlefinger was interested in Catelyn, Sansa’s mother, when they were younger. Basically, Littlefinger wanted Catelyn but she was betrothed to Brandon Stark, Eddard’s older brother. Littlefinger challenged Brandon for a duel, and of course, he was beaten. He was not killed because Catelyn convinced Brandon not to do it. Littlefinger took this as a slight and he never recovered from it. No wonder he is behind the fall of House Stark. The viewer also gets Lysa’s opinion of Brandon Stark: handsome, arrogant, and cruel. I see Brandon Stark as handsome and arrogant, but not cruel. The “cruel” characteristic is just a biased description of Brandon.
  • Lysa Arryn – Littlefinger: the viewer becomes aware that they are both responsible for poisoning Jon Arryn and for instigating the war (first season). It is obvious that Lysa was always jealous of her sister, Catelyn, making it easier for the viewer to believe that she would lie to her sister to blame the Lannisters for Jon Arryn’s murder.
  • The fight: I think this scene was pretty good. However, many fans are complaining that Jon really is not good with the sword. I think he is good. However, it is hard to fight with a longsword and a lot easier with knives in a narrow space. I also think that it was fair for the girl that was constantly raped by Tanner to stab him (some sort of poetic justice).
