Ear Cuffs and Game of Thrones S04E10 – The Children (Part 1)

In my last post, I wrote about stud earrings. This post will be about ear cuffs, a great complement to stud earrings. Here are my choices:

I have also included in my selections earrings that look like ear cuffs.

Here are the highlights for the season finale of Game of Thrones (S04E10 The Children) – Part 1. I will write about the remaining plot lines in my next two posts which will be published this weekend. Overall the episode was great and very well-done. I love how the episode ended with Arya, something totally different (I am not a big fan of Daenerys). Of course, book readers who watch the show always expect more, and opinions among them vary a lot.

Jojen’s death: Some book readers seem to be upset about the manner of Jojen’s death. I guess that is related to the fact that Jojen is still alive in the books. However, he is very weak as of the last published book, a fact that has led readers to speculate that he will not be alive by the end of the series. I believe the TV show has spoiled the readers concerning Jojen’s status in the books. The question here is why Jojen had to die and Meera had to survive. It seems that she will have a role to play in the future, probably finding and bringing Dark Sister, one of the ancestral swords of House Targaryen, to Jon. The last wielder of Dark Sister was Bloodraven, the Greenseer. It has been speculated that Dark Sister will be used to kill Melisandre. Here is a link exposing a very short summary of this theory / speculation (Val is a character that has not been introduced yet in the TV show, and CotF stands for Children of the Forest):

Another thing to look forward is the interaction between Meera and Bran. In the books Bran has a little crush on her especially when he sees her fight the wights.

The wights: Some people would have loved to see the wights with more meat. However, my husband who likes everything associated with zombies loved those moving skeletons, even though he said that the special effects could have been better. The first thing that came to my mind while watching this scene was the first movie of Pirates of the Caribbean. However, comparisons to other movies have been made such as Jason and the Argonauts and Army of Darkness.

I did not mind seeing the wights as skeletons – I like the scene overall. I guess the “meaty” wights would have been difficult to defeat. It is easier to disassemble skeletons with one good hit than meaty wights. Because the TV show did not include Coldhands, a friendly wight very likely controlled by Bloodraven, it would have been difficult for Meera to beat all the wights. Basically Coldhands helps Meera in fighting the wights and protecting Bran and Jojen. Since Coldhands was cut from the show, it would be easier for Meera to fight skeletons.

Three-eyed Raven / Bloodraven: In the books Bloodraven is more treelike, and the way he looks  like is not nice. He is pale, very old, skinny and without an eye. There is even a twig coming out of the empty eye socket. His whole body is merged with the weirwood. The meeting between Bloodraven and Bran in the books created a mind-blowing impression on me, something that the TV show was not able to recreate. The best line in this scene is given by the Greenseer, a line that confirms his identity as Lord Bloodraven: “I’ve been watching you, all of your lives, with a thousand eyes and one.” Here is a link that establishes the connection between Bloodraven and the bolded comment: A Thousand Eyes, and One. Another interesting line from Bloodraven to Bran is “you will never walk again, but you will fly.

Arya – Brienne: I loved their interaction even though it never happened in the books. I liked how Arya thought she was a knight, and how both of them shared the same experience of how their fathers disapproved of their “tomboy” activities. Sincerely I envy those two – I have always been a girly person, and I have realized that my “tomboy” cousin had a lot of fun doing things that I was scared of. If Arya opted to go with her, Brienne could have been a “parent” figure for her. Brienne is honourable like Ned (probably even more), and she could have taught Arya many things including sword fighting. However, Arya is destined for a darker path.

The Hound – Brienne: This fight never takes place in the book. Many book readers disliked this scene since it made Brienne look better than the Hound at sword fighting. My husband liked it though. However, he did not want these two likeable characters to fight each other. That really upset him. He even joked that we will see Arya Vs. Tyrion next season. Compared to many book readers, I really like this fight scene. The Hound was not in his prime due to the neck injury given by Biter, so it was expected that he would find it difficult to fight Brienne. However, the Hound is not done, and it is highly likely that he will appear later on. He has a role to fulfil: He has to kill his brother, Gregor.

The Hound – Arya: I like how Arya refused to give Sandor the gift of mercy, especially after trying to provoke Arya with his comments about Micah and Sansa. Many book readers and TV viewers did not like The Hound telling Arya to go with Brienne. I did not mind him saying that to Arya. I think The Hound realized that Brienne is a very honourable person that just wanted to protect Arya. This is supported when Brienne told him that she did not want to fight / kill him after disarming him. However, the Hound’s reply as expected was that he was not a knight, and continued the fight. I think he realized too late that Brienne wanted to help them.

Next post, I will discuss the Lannisters and Jon / Stannis.
